How – to play Child Avatars At The Isle Of Dee

Playing a child character can be challenging experience.
Whether you are exclusively playing children characters or just start to consider playing one, here are some guiding words to help you playing a child at the Isle of Dee without running yourself or others into troubles outside of RP.


Playing a child avatar is no easy task and requires you to think in terms as realistic as possible while still being able to assume the role of a child in medieval times when you yourself are an adult of the modern world.


– You must be 18 years or older in real life; age verification may be requested. You are expected to abide.

– You must have weaknesses like everyone else. You are not invincible, you are not a superhero.

– You must be realistic in all roleplay situations related to the sim.

– You must act and look the age and race you play * see extras in bottom

– You must be aware of basic roleplay etiquette, and use it. If you do not understand, it please refer to the How-To roleplay information supplied by the sim.

If you have questions, ask admins and moderators. It’s much better than running into OOC drama issues.

*Act the Age AND Race? What Does That Mean?

Every race rears its children differently than other races do. Some let their children be wild, happy, and free; others train them to be serious, un-impulsive, obedient, et cetera.

For example, a 10-year-old Seelie Fae would not act the same way a 10-year-old Drow would behave. The exception to this would be if the Drow child was reared by Seelie Fae, or the Seelie Fae raised by Drow…and, most likely, that would never happen although anything can happen in a good storyline.

If you are unsure of how to play a child in your specific race choice, refer to your race’s information. Look carefully at how the specific race develops and acts, and modify it to your child avatar so it makes sense.

Children grow older, depending on race faster or slower.
If you want to start a character from scratch with a lack  of knowledge, a lack of skill, a  child character is a good way to start and develop your character. Its not realistic to be an  8 years old human child  for three years – so let them grow and develop a personality based on in character experience. Positive and negative.

While some sources may be variable, the overall picture is that life for medieval children was not easy.

*Roleplaying Your Child’s Age

It’s simple: Act your age, and think the way your child’s age and race would think. A 5-year-old does not speak like a baby; a 10-year-old does not use big words and sound 40. A 10-year old child is not going to think like an adult; therefore, their reactions would not be like an adult’s. A child may scream out; an adult may walk away silently.

Your age may also determine how you or adults will react to any given situation. For example, an older child may be held at higher expectations than a younger child. If you do something wrong the result may differ depending on the age and scene of what is going on.

*Realistic Roleplay Consequences

For everything you do there is a consequence, either good or bad. It is called Cause and Effect.

Regardless if you are roleplaying a child or an adult, you are expected to follow all rules and fairly roleplay the consequences to your actions. While roleplay is consensual, if you do something wrong you must be prepared to follow the consequences. Discuss this with the players in the scene in IM if necessary.

Keep in mind that children were not coddled during this era. Corporal punishment was the medieval way of illustrating that actions had consequences. They were married young, and responsibility was forced on them at young ages.

They led stricter lives than perhaps some of you have in real life. If they get into trouble, they deal with it. This can be anything from incarceration, beatings, and the like. They were known to be seen and not heard. Urchins did their best to stay hidden and out of reach of being caught.

*Children Owning/Using Weapons

Children back in the day may have had weapons, but they did not go around randomly stabbing people. They were specifically taught, so you must be taught how to use them through roleplay. Do not expect to be a perfect swordsman when you are ten years old; you are a child, not a knight.

Any weapons you do end up with, you must logically acquire through roleplay; you cannot simply pick up a random dagger and be like “Oh I got a dagger! Let’s attack!” Odd weapons beyond the basics may require approval. Any acquired weapon must be realistic; a small 12-year old cannot realistically wield a full size adult sword.

Weapons can be taken away from you; if you misbehave with one, expect an adult to take it.

Every race is different, and what they do or do not know of weapon use and self defense varies.

Children characters are excluded from the usage of the REVOLT meter. You may Text RP, or you may use Dice.

*Children and Vulgar Language/Gestures

(By gestures, we mean flipping the birdie and such. SL gestures should already not be used in roleplay.)

You may be a tough kid who grew up in a hard life, but adults are requested to use appropriate gestures and language…so you must also limit swearing and offensive gestures.

It may occur at times from adults, but as a child character you need to keep in mind that you will likely pay a consequence if you call an adult a whore or start swearing at them. Find better words to get your point across. Again, be realistic: you are roleplaying a child.

*Children and Violence/Kidnapping/Killing

As a child avatar, being involved in high violence situations is not only unrealistic but unnecessary. An example: a Drow child should not be participating in torture techniques the adults are doing. They should not even be present or in chat range.

Child characters are not intended to kill. While they may not be perfect innocent children, they are not murderers. If a child is a murderer, they would suffer the same consequence as an adult, meaning they would be hanged, beheaded, or at least imprisoned for life.


However, in saying this, violence does happen…and as child avatars are not invincible, they can be killed. If you walk into a life threatening situation, what do you expect? Again, be realistic and don’t be ridiculous. It is wise to act and think like a child and run, not get further involved.

Just as a child can get into bad situations and get hurt, they can also be kidnapped. It is your responsibility to inform the other player as to what you are, or are not, okay with and what is appropriate for your character and age. Consensual roleplay is a must.

*Children and Magic

In Dee, it is impossible for adults to harness magic and use it correctly…much less for children to. As a child you -do not- have the power and development needed to harness it, no matter where you came from before arriving in Dee.

*Children and Fighting

There is no doubt that children get into scuffles, such as school yard fights and arguments. They may not always agree with adults, and often may argue with adults. This is realistic behavior.

Regardless, children do not force themselves into fights. As a child avatar you are expected to roleplay realistically; a child normally would not needlessly pick a fight with someone older and bigger than them. Remember that adults are bigger, faster, smarter, and older than you; don’t be foolish.
